Missed Open Enrollment? Here's What You Can Still Do.
Open Enrollment is the once-a-year window when anyone can sign up. If you missed it, don't panic — most people who think they're locked out actually still qualify under one of three paths.
Path 1 — Special Enrollment Period (best deal)
If you had any qualifying life event in the past 60 days, you can enroll in a full ACA plan with full subsidies — same as Open Enrollment.
- Lost job-based coverage
- Got married or divorced
- Had a baby or adopted
- Moved to a new ZIP code
- Aged off a parent's plan
- Income changed enough to affect subsidy eligibility
Path 2 — Year-round low-income enrollment
If your household income is at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level (~$22,590 single, ~$46,800 family of 4), you can enroll year-round with no qualifying event. Many people in this bracket don't know this rule exists.
Path 3 — Short-term medical (the bridge)
If you genuinely don't qualify for either path above, short-term plans are available year-round. They are NOT ACA-compliant — they exclude pre-existing conditions, may not cover maternity or mental health, and don't earn subsidies. But they cover catastrophic events and they beat being uninsured.
Documentation depends on the event — termination letter, marriage certificate, birth certificate, new lease, etc. Your advisor will tell you exactly what to send and where.
Forgetting is unfortunately not a qualifying event. But check the year-round low-income rule — many adults qualify and never realized.
